Leys Junior Sports Competition News - '16-'17
Autumn Term
Y5/6 Athletics
Team: 8 Girls and 8 Boys
The season got off to a great start with our Y5/6 Athletics Team. They competed against 14 schools and came 7th. Most importantly they never gave up :-)
Y3/4 Athletics
Team: 8 Girls and 8 Boys
This was the first time that some of the children had represented the school but that didn't stop their ambition. They completed against 11 schools and came 5th! We were also told that our school had the longest combined average for the chest pass. A special well done to the Girls relay team that came 1st and the Boys relay team that also came 1st.
Y5/6 Tag Rugby
Team: 7 Boys and 3 Girls
Another new sport for Leys Junior School but Mrs Bradley with her love for Leicester Tigers was determined to lead the children to victory. The team showed excellent determination as it was a very cold day. They were undefeated in the first round and got through to the quarters, unfortunately with seconds to go to the last whistle we were 6-7. It still meant that we came 5th. Not bad for our first go
Y3/4 End Ball
Team A, B and C (20 Girls and Boys)
We were lucky enough to take 3 teams to the End Ball competition. Team C won the Team Spirit award for their determination and good sportsmanship, Team B played their socks off and Team A came 3rd. Well done teams for representing the school so well.
Spring Term
Y5/6 Boys Futsal
Team: A and B (12 Boys)
We have some fabulous players in both Team A and Team B. Both teams dominated play but the quick 7 minute games just didn't go their way.
Y5/6 Mixed Futsal
Team: 2 Girls and 4 Boys
During a special afternoon game we were able to choose children who may lack in confidence and so don't usually play for their school team. During each game their confidence grew and grew. A special well done to Kyle who was an excellent team captain.
Y5/6 Girls Futsal
Team: 6 Girls
One of my favourite competitions so far as the girls continually displayed those all important Olympic Values. The girls never gave up against some very strong teams. Madison-Paige won "man of the match" 3 times as she was excellent in defence, Jodie continually saved goals and our strikers (Faith and Holly) were very pink by the time they finished as they constantly strived to get goals. Well done to the whole team for trying your best.
Y4-Y6 Table Tennis
Team: 2 Boys and 2 Girls
Mr Booth did a great job coaching the children - who knew he was a secret Table Tennis Player! The team came 2nd too!
Y3/Y4 Mini Tennis
Team: 2 Girls and 2 Boys
Well done to Katy, Isabelle, Aaron and Luke - you came 2nd and got to the Amber Valley finals where you came 3rd. Super playing - you never gave up.
Y3/4 and Y5/6 Gymnastics
Team: 6 in each team (mixture of boys and girls)
1st in Body Management, 2nd in Floor and 4th overall - we know we need to work on the vault next year!
Y5/6 Netball
Team: 9 in a team
After a very tense final you came joint 1st!
Summer Term
Y3/4 and Y5/6 Cross Country
Team: 32 children
After lots of practice at lunch time 32 of you set off to Alfreton Park. Amazing determination - a special well done to Jack T who came 7th in the Y3 race out of 100 children in Amber Valley.
Y3-Y6 Dance Festival
Team and Solos
A wonderful performance as ever.
Y4-Y6 Go Ride Team and Individual
Well done to all who took part and thanks to the parents who ferried their children to all the different events and heats.
Y5/6 Swimming Gala
Team: 3 Y5 Girls, 3 Y5 boys, 3 Y6 Girls, 3 Y6 Boys
A very excited group left Alfreton on our very posh bus to go to Belper Leisure Centre. Great encouragement was shown. A particular well done to Freya who stood in as an honorary Y5 even though she is a year 4!
Y5/6 Quad Kids
Team: 5 boys and 5 girls
This is an athletics event involving standing long jump, javalin throw, long distance run and sprint. You all showed huge determination and came 4th - Well done!
Y5/6 Boys Cricket
Team: 8 boys
A fantastic result - you came 2nd. Great support for each other too.
Y5/6 Girls Cricket
Team: 8 Girls
Determination and perseverance was in bucket loads.
Y6 Tough Runner
Team: 4
An iron man style challenge
Y6 Orienteering
Team: 4
A tricky course which you ran the day of our sports day - exhausted children at the end of the day.
Thank you for all your efforts this year children, your drive to win might be even stronger than mine :-)
